Google Search Makes Character Counter Websites Less Necessary
  • Google is adding an interactive Character Counter to AI Overviews, allowing users to enter text and instantly count characters directly within Google Search.
  • The update could reduce organic traffic to character-counting websites, as Google increasingly provides interactive tools and direct answers for simple tasks within search results.

Google is adding an interactive Character Counter tool directly to AI Overviews. This means users can count characters without visiting a separate character-counting website.

When users search for terms such as “character counter,” Google AI Overviews can now show an interactive widget where they can enter text and instantly see the character count.

The feature was spotted by Damir B, who shared a video of it on X. He noted that websites such as WordCounter.net and other character-counting tools could see a major drop in traffic as Google provides the functionality directly in search results.

This is part of a broader pattern in Google Search. Google has increasingly added tools and direct answers for simple queries, reducing the need to visit external websites.

Similar features have appeared for weather, dictionaries, movies and TV shows, mortgage calculators, emojis, and other searches. With AI Overviews, Google is taking this approach further by adding interactive tools that let users complete simple tasks directly on the search results page.

For websites that mainly provide basic utilities such as character counting, these changes could make it harder to attract organic search traffic when Google offers the same functionality within its own results.
