Google and OpenAI are testing new interface changes that could change how users interact with AI-generated answers. Google is experimenting with a new location for its AI Mode button in Search while also testing a different way of displaying citation cards inside AI Mode. At the same time, ChatGPT is trying a new citation experience with an overlay panel and an updated shopping interface. These tests suggest both companies are refining how AI search results are presented and how users access supporting sources.
Google Experiments With AI Mode Button and Citation Cards
Google is testing a new placement for the AI Mode button on desktop Search. Instead of appearing by default on the Google homepage, the button now shows inside the main search bar after a user begins refining a search query. This is the first time Google has integrated AI Mode directly into the primary search bar, making it easier to switch to AI-powered search during an active search session.
Google is also testing a different citation layout in AI Mode. According to Sachin Patel, citation cards for free product listings now appear at the bottom of the AI-generated response instead of alongside the content. Selecting a product citation automatically takes users to the citation section at the end of the answer, creating a more direct path to the supporting information.
These changes are still being tested, and there is no confirmation that they will become permanent features.
ChatGPT Tests Citation Overlay and Updated Shopping Panel
OpenAI is also experimenting with how ChatGPT displays sources. Brodie Clark spotted a new citation experience where clicking a source opens a citation box overlay instead of taking users directly to a separate page or section.
The update also extends to ChatGPT's shopping experience. Alongside the new citation overlay, OpenAI is testing a refreshed product display and shopping panel that appears after users click on product-related results.
Even though the two companies have distinct methods, their common aim seems to be that of providing citations and product information conveniently accessible without disturbing the running AI conversation. Users may witness further modifications in displaying AI-generated search and shopping results as these trials continue.
