Google will begin removing Google Assistant from mobile devices on September 4, 2026, as it moves users to Gemini, its newer AI assistant.
The change will affect Android phones and tablets, along with compatible devices connected to them. Google says the rollout may take a few weeks to reach all users.
Gemini Will Replace Google Assistant
When the feature roll-out hits a particular device, Google assistant won't be the one to respond and users also will not be able to switch between them. However, Gemini will appear as the new default assistant for Google users on eligible Android devices in areas where Gemini is launched.
People will still be able to activate their assistant by speaking in the conventional ways like "Hey Google" or pressing the power button.
Wear OS, Headphones And Android Auto Also Affected
The change will also extend to compatible devices paired with an Android phone.
This includes:
- Watches running Wear OS
- Compatible headphones and earbuds
- Vehicles using Android Auto through a connected mobile device
For cars with Google built-in, Google Assistant will continue to work after September 4, 2026.
Google Assistant Is Not Going Away Everywhere
Google says this shutdown specifically affects the assistant experience on mobile devices and accessories connected to them.
The company is also working on bringing Gemini to other products, including Google TV devices, Google Home speakers and smart displays.
